Changes to ADHD Prescribing

From 1 February 2026 vocationally registered GPs and nurse practitioners can assess, diagnose and prescribe ADHD/Aroreretini medication for adults (18 years and older). Those GPs and nurse practitioners who offer these services will have done extra training and have a specific interest and expertise in this area. This change does not apply to child ADHD/Aroreretini diagnosis and prescribing. ADHD/Aroreretini services offered will be different across practices and communities.

Changes to Prescription Length From February 2026

From 1 st February 2026 some medications can be prescribed for up to 12 months. This is to improve access to medicines for people with stable, long-term conditions. GPs can use discretion in terms of prescribing length and are not obliged to do 12 month prescriptions. For example, certain conditions that are stable and require less frequent monitoring such as hypothyroidism may have a 12 month prescription and other conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure that
